We want you to feel comfortable.

Your dentist may recommend anesthesia to help reduce anxiety related to your dental treatment and in order to make your dental visit as comfortable as possible.

There are different types of dental anesthesia your dentist may recommend depending on your needs. Some patients need or prefer higher levels of anesthesia than others.

A thorough medical history review is required prior to any type of anesthesia administration.

  • Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is an anesthetic agent used by dentists. Safe and effective nitrous oxide is a method of relieving discomfort and anxiety. The patient remains in complete control while feeling calm and relaxed. Most people fully recover from the effects within ten minutes of stopping the anesthetic.

The nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and the amount of sedation is adjusted for each individual patient. It is administered through a mask and may be used alone or in conjunction with other pain management options. Nitrous oxide may not be appropriate for people with mild-moderate anxiety and very young children.

  • Local Anesthesia

Local Anesthesia is the most common format of anesthesia used in a dental office. It is used to eliminate pain directly where it is administered. Local anesthesia can be injected, or applied topically as a gel. Topical anesthetics can also be used to numb an area in preparation for administration of an injectable local anesthetic. Topical and injectable local anesthetic are used prior to fillings, root canals, surgery and many other procedures where pain may be anticipated.
